Where Art and History Collide –
Welcome to Hiketa
Port Town in Eastern Kagawa
Historic Edo-period Townscapes
Hiketa, located in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture, once flourished as a castle town and peaceful port facing the Seto Inland Sea. During the Edo period, it was known as "the first large port in the east" and bustled as a base of the feudal government. Even today, the historic townscape, lined with rows of white-walled townhouses and lattice doors, remains vividly preserved. Hiketa's scenery is not just a tourist destination; it is a special space where you can feel the breath of community and the passage of time.
"Hiketa's Old Townscape" is not only home to many ancient buildings, but historic industries such as soy sauce and wasanbon sugar continue to thrive. This town, filled with traditional culture and kind faces, has a nostalgic, soul-warming charm.
Hiketa is also blessed with a wonderful natural environment, welcoming visitors with a gentle breeze from the Seto Inland Sea, rolling mountain ranges, and rural landscapes that change color with the seasons. Though small in size, Hiketa offers a rich experience where history, culture, nature, and lifestyles coexist in harmony.
With the Setouchi Triennale, Hiketa will become a stage for new encounters and creativity. Experience with your eyes and heart this extraordinary space where town and art come together.
