Welcome to Hiketa

Where Art and History Collide – Welcome to Hiketa

Port Town in Eastern Kagawa
Historic Edo-period Townscapes

Hiketa, located in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture, once flourished as a castle town and peaceful port facing the Seto Inland Sea. During the Edo period, it was known as "the first large port in the east" and bustled as a base of the feudal government. Even today, the historic townscape, lined with rows of white-walled townhouses and lattice doors, remains vividly preserved. Hiketa's scenery is not just a tourist destination; it is a special space where you can feel the breath of community and the passage of time.

"Hiketa's Old Townscape" is not only home to many ancient buildings, but historic industries such as soy sauce and wasanbon sugar continue to thrive. This town, filled with traditional culture and kind faces, has a nostalgic, soul-warming charm.

Hiketa is also blessed with a wonderful natural environment, welcoming visitors with a gentle breeze from the Seto Inland Sea, rolling mountain ranges, and rural landscapes that change color with the seasons. Though small in size, Hiketa offers a rich experience where history, culture, nature, and lifestyles coexist in harmony.

With the Setouchi Triennale, Hiketa will become a stage for new encounters and creativity. Experience with your eyes and heart this extraordinary space where town and art come together.

The installation is located in the Kasaya Residence, a former sake brewery, and was inspired by the glove and soy sauce factories that once lined the town's streets. Drawing clues from the memories that dwell in vats used to ferment sake and soy sauce, the artists use vats, lights and time to reveal the tacit process of fermentation.

They describe their vision for the installation as follows: "Located near a glove factory that makes fine, handmade gloves and a soy sauce factory that still uses decades-old vats, the Kasaya Residence is waiting for a transformation to take place. Glovemaking gives the tactile sense a way to care for the hands, the memory of sake even now warms the spirit, and the process of soy sauce brewing still surprises the palate. Warmth, a pleasant tipsiness, umami. Each one of these represent a change derived from the amazing interaction of elements with their environment, a metaphor for the chemical reaction of fermentation." Open, cylindrical vats have been embedded in the floor inside the house, lit from inside, and covered with tempered glass. An elliptical light inside each vat responds to the movement of the moon in the sky. The inside of the vats glow, projecting mystical sunken circles, which upon closer inspection, reveal the texture of a microbial world created with paint and prints. The venue is envisioned as a large social space that can be used by individuals and by groups.
