Bamboo lanterns that add color to the end of the day
In the Hiketa area of the Setouchi Triennale, bamboo lanterns illuminate the historic streets every evening from Saturday through Sunday and on holidays, allowing visitors to enjoy the nighttime art experience🎵
These lanterns are lit and placed by volunteers from the city❣
Divide into two groups and place bamboo lanterns at designated spots along the routes from Miki Clinic to Kasaya Residence and from Nouvelle Post to Ranri Industries. In the final area, you’ll have a special mission to place them freely! While the number and locations are set, you’re free to choose the colors to light them and how to arrange them!❗
This time, we followed volunteers on the Nouvel Post to Ranley Industries route! They participated as a “Grandmother & Granddaughter” team! How will the final area at Nouvel Post be illuminated? ✨
Nouvel Post, registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property, is a brick building featuring octagonal windows. The structure itself creates a wonderfully retro space.
As a special mission, volunteers are invited to freely place bamboo lanterns here according to their own sensibilities❣
I can’t stop getting excited about what color to choose even before setting it up! 🎶
The idea of displaying bamboo lanterns lying down never occurred to me, so it delights viewers as part of the artwork ✨

Colorful lights are adding to the festive atmosphere of the Setouchi Triennale! Another group of bamboo lantern volunteers and their families came to see the displays too. They exchanged ideas about how to arrange their own areas, snapped photos enthusiastically… A peaceful time flowed by🎵
Grandma, who had grown busy as her granddaughter grew up and could no longer spend time with them, was delighted to participate in this Setouchi Triennale
that energized the city, allowing her to spend precious time with her family. ✨
